Dose Espresso, Willoughby

There's nothing like a good coffee to kick-start the morning! And with the number of people that come to Dose Espresso for their daily dose of caffeine, you can be sure that they serve a good cup.

The cafe is constantly full with streams of people getting takeaway or sitting down and enjoying a long brekkie. The exposed brick, mismatched furniture and bare lightbulbs give an industrial hipster vibe to the cafe - but there's barely a hipster in sight with most of the customers being families, groups of middle-aged friends and young and old couples.

Bacon and egg roll - $10
Every time I've visited Dose, I've tried to order the crushed avocado, haloumi, roasted tomato and pesto on sourdough ($14), and every time it has been sold out. It's a testament to their popularity, but it also means that I have to settle for something else. Not that there's anything wrong with the bacon and egg roll which has two free range eggs, bacon, tasty cheese and tomato relish on toasted schiacciata. It's Sir D's go-to dish and never disappoints.

Brekkie toast - $10

For more bacony goodness, try the brekkie toast which has bacon, tasty cheese, mayo, tomato and rocket on toasted schiacciata. It doesn't have eggs but it's my pick of the breakfast offerings with the fresh tomato and rocket lightening up the otherwise heavy filling.

Latte - $3.50; Organic Belgian hot chocolate - $4.50

The coffee here is good, so good that a friend from Melbourne who tasted the coffee here claimed that it was "just as good as Melbourne coffee" - and then proceeded to order another cup! But if coffee isn't your thing, there's always the organic Belgian hot chocolate which is made with real chocolate and is deliciously moreish. As much as I love my coffee, I've taken to getting the hot chocolate at Dose because it's just that good.

Better than a Reuben! - $12

The lunch menu offers more sandwiches and this Better than a Reuben! sandwich comes with roast beef, sweet gherkin, dijon mustard, onion jam and rocket on sourdough. It's got all the components of a Reuben but is a bit lacking in the roast beef department, and doesn't have the same juicyness of other Reuben sandwiches.

Chicken sandwich - $12

The chicken sandwich is a winner though with a chicken breast, garlic mayo, celery and walnut filling with tasty cheese and rocket on quinoa and soya sourdough. It's creamy with plenty of chicken and a bit of crunch from the celery and walnuts.

Wholemeal crumpets with Nutella - $6

For the sweet tooths out there, there's wholemeal crumpets with Nutella. Slather on the Nutella thickly and watch it ooze into the warm, chewy crumpets - and enjoy!

  2. Where was this place when I lived in Willoughby (which was well before the rise of the hipster btw). Your B&E roll look great - I love the way they've cooked the egg.
