Melbourne Snackage

On top of eating three square meals a day while on holidays, there is always room in my stomach for some snacking. And in Melbourne, there are plenty of places for a sweet or savoury snack between meals.

Chokolait

Before I travelled to Melbourne, I remember Richard telling me to make sure I visited Chokolait while I was there. At the time, I didn't see what the big fuss was all about, but I think the fact that I visited Chokolait three times during my week-long stay in Melbourne is a testament to how awesome it really is!

Chilli hot chocolate - $6.50

A range of hot chocolates with various origins, flavours, and cocoa percentages adorns the menu and we select the chilli hot chocolate to try on our first visit. The waitress asks us how hot we want the chilli on a scale of 1-10 (or more if we like!) and knowing my weak chilli tolerance, we go with a lowly 2. Despite getting minimal amount of chilli, the hot chocolate has a quite a significant tingle and spicy kick on the tongue and we wonder at how hot some of the higher numbers would be. There are also names scrawled on the blackboard with numbers in brackets next to them indicating the chilli level that they ordered for their chilli hot chocolate. Some of the numbers were in the 100s which was crazy!

Cinnamon hot chocolate - $6.50

The cinnamon hot chocolate is the perfect foil for the chilly Melbourne weather with warm comforting cinnamon flavours permeating through the rich chocolate. The mug is coated in melted chocolate on the inside before adding the hot chocolate making it extra silky and chocolatey.

Dark chocolate frog - $1.20 (left) and milk chocolate parline duck - $1.80 (right)

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Chokolait, don't leave without buying some of their individual handmade chocolates which can be purchased individually or pre-packaged.

Box of chocolates

Their beautiful chocolates are not only pretty to look at but delicious to eat as well, with some creative flavours and designs. Using good quality chocolate also means that they are super smooth and melt in your mouth.

Chocolate pavlova with double cream and strawberries - $9

Oh and did I forget to mention the chocolate pavlova? This is what had Richard raving in the first place so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it. A massive slice of pavlova was served to us with double cream, strawberries and melted chocolate and it was light as a cloud and filled with little chunks of chocolate throughout. The meringue itself was quite sweet but coupled with the strawberries and cream it was perfect.

Lord of the Fries

It wasn't all about the sweets. We spent our first night in Melbourne bar hopping and the best late night snack to soak up all the alcohol is none other than a cone of fries from Lord of the Fries.

Cone of fries with Belgian sauce - $4.95

We got a cone of fries with Belgian sauce which is essentially mayonnaise. I love the little toothpick things for picking up the fries without getting your hands dirty, but really the best way is just to attack it with your hands. The fries weren't particularly special but it did serve as the perfect post-boozing snack whilst walking the streets of Melbourne back to our hotel.

Little Cupcakes

Melbourne is famous for its laneways and I came across the Little Cupcakes shop in one of them. Inside the quaint, cosy little shop were rows upon rows of little cupcakes with perfectly piped icing and delicate decorations.

Rows and rows of little cupcakes

We couldn't resist getting a few to share and we took them back to the hotel and cut them up so we could have a taste of each flavour.

(clockwise from top) Cinnamon, cookies and cream, pistachio, red velvet - $2 each

All the cakes were fluffy and light and my favourite out of the four would have to be the pistachio with its nutty, not-too-sweet flavour. I also loved the creamy cinnamon icing on top of the cinnamon cupcake and the sparkly sprinkle of sugar on the top. The chocolate cake in the cookies and cream cupcake and the red velvet cake were a little bit more moist and dense than the other two which suited the richer icing on both the cupcakes.

And even though it was close to dinner time, we couldn't help devouring them all!
