Circa Espresso, Parramatta

Inside Circa Espresso

Walking around the quieter side of Parramatta station, it would be hard to miss Circa Espresso. This hole in the wall cafe is situated in a little gap between two residential buildings. A splash of colour from a graffiti-ed wall and patrons sitting on wooden stools and upturned milk crates tell you that there is something hip and happening going on in that little laneway, and that would be Circa's fantastic food and coffee.

Iced coffee - $4

We've ventured out to Suze's hood today for a taste of Circa's breakfast menu. My first experience of Circa was an impressive cup of takeaway coffee and so I'm glad to be heading back to try more of their menu. I start with an iced coffee - not a sugary, cream-topped version but a real iced coffee made purely from coffee and ice.

Avocado on sourdough toast with sea salt, cracked pepper and lemon oil - $7

We order from the weekend breakfast menu where most of the items are less than $15. The avocado on toast is a simple dish but done well with a sprinkling of sea salt, freshly cracked pepper and drizzle of lemon oil over the top.

Potato and dill cakes with scrambled egg, salmon gravalax and creme fraiche - $14

Potato and dill cakes are a more substantial offering, and are quite filling without feeling too stodgy. The potato cakes are studded with cubes of potato, and topped with a crown of fluffy scrambled eggs. Hidden underneath are slices of salmon gravalax which is made in house.

Portobello mushrooms, Danish fetta and basil pesto - $7

I love mushrooms so the portobello mushrooms on sourdough toast is my choice. The juicy mushrooms are pan fried and placed on top of a large slice of sourdough with a fresh basil pesto spread on top. Bits of Danish fetta provide salty bursts of flavour and there is the slight sweetness of caramelised onions as well.

Baked eggs with sujuk, Danish fetta, tomato and hints of chilli served in the pan - $13

I have a bit of food envy when the baked eggs arrives. Served in the pan, the baked eggs has slices of spicy sujuk sausage, chunks of fetta and tomato and two eggs cracked on the top. It smells amazing and I love that there is bread on the side to make sure every last bit of the dish is mopped up.

It's a popular little cafe with very reasonable prices and a great, chilled-out atmosphere and if I'm ever around the area I will definitely be back. There's not too much seating so be prepared to wait for a table, especially on the weekends. If you're short on time, make sure you grab yourself a takeaway coffee and one of the cakes or pastries from the cabinet for a quick brekky on the go.

  6. I lived there for three years and now I know about somewhere decent to eat Breakfast in Parramatta! I feel so ripped off. It looks wonderful, those potato cakes and the baked eggs look wonderful.

Laneway eateries in Parramatta will be a godsend. It's supposed to be our second CBD but without any really fabulous local places, the best places to eat tend to be franchises like the Bavarian Bier Cafe and The Meat and Wine Co.

    This place looks marvellous.
