Snacking in Hong Kong

Shopping all day can work up an appetite, but luckily in Hong Kong there are places to eat around every corner. Here are just some of the snacks that I ate along the way...

Hong Kong Egg waffles - HK$15 (about AU$2)

You can't go to Hong Kong without trying egg waffles, or gai daan jai (鷄蛋仔). Every time I go to Hong Kong, I try to eat as many of these as possible because they're so good! They are made by pouring a batter made from eggs, flour, sugar and evaporated milk onto a hot waffle iron with round indentations. Each egg-shaped bubble is filled with a soft cakey centre but the rest of the waffle is wonderfully crispy. They come in a range of different flavours nowadays, but I almost always get the original "egg" flavour. My favourite vendor is North Point Egg Waffle which has several locations around Hong Kong.

Wonton noodles including a side dish - HK$42

Another thing that I love to eat in Hong Kong is wonton noodles. We visited Chee Kei (池記) for a pre-dinner snack one night where you can get a small bowl of wonton noodles and a side for only HK$42 (about AU$5).

Steamed gai lan

The noodles are thin, chewy egg noodles with slippery wontons floating around in the soup. A side of steamed young gai lan completes the meal.

Sampan congee with side dish - HK$48

Chee Kei also offers something for congee lovers. A bowl of sampan congee (tang jai jook, 艇仔粥) plus a side dish will set you back about HK$48 (about AU$6). The sampan congee contains a mish mash of ingredients, like seafood (typically fish and squid), some meat and peanuts.

Deep fried wontons

There are a range of sides to choose from, including fish balls and chicken wings, but we go with the deep fried wontons.

Macarons from Paul Lafayet - HK$120 (about AU$15) for 8

Long time readers will know that I have a big sweet tooth, so of course some of these snacks were going to include cakes and yes, macarons as well. We stumbled across Paul Lafayet Patisserie Francaise in the K11 shopping centre, and I couldn't resist getting some to take home with me. The flavours we tried were (left to right, top to bottom) - matcha, black sesame, vanilla, chocolate, passionfruit, caramel, pistachio and raspberry.

Patisserie Tony Wong

On a friend's recommendation, we also went hunting for a cake shop called Patisserie Tony Wong. We were greeted by a little store that had an almost dazzling display of intricate cakes and pastries.

Chocolate truffle dome

Hazelnut and chocolate crunchy cake

Concorde

It was hard to choose which ones to get, but in the end we sampled three cakes between us. Each cake cost around HK$40-45 (approx AU$5). They were all so good I couldn't pick a favourite!

Latte with a bear face from Cafe Corridor

If you're after good coffee (or one with a bear face!) there are two places that I can recommend. The one above is from Cafe Corridor (26A Russell St, Causeway Bay) - literally located in a corridor off the street in Times Square. The other is 18 Grams which also does a pretty good coffee, and has 3 locations in Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui.

Assorted chocolates from Lucullus

And for some treats that you can take home with you, there are these adorable chocolates available from Lucullus, which has several locations around Hong Kong. In addition to chocolates, there are also cakes and cookies, but who can resist the cute little mice, cats and bunnies? It also helps that they taste great :)
