Paramount Coffee Project, Surry Hills

Here crabby crabby crabby...

Paramount Coffee Project has been on my go-to list for some time now, so when a public holiday conveniently rolled around, I made the most of my day off and took the opportunity to pay them a visit.

The cafe space is airy and bright, with a few small tables, some larger, family-style tables in the centre of the cafe and counter seating at the coffee bar. We're lucky to get a table quickly at the big shared table, but the place is quite popular around lunchtime and we notice some people having to wait until a table becomes available until they are seated.

Latte - $4

Coffee is serious business here with coffee beans displayed on the bar and a few coffee blends on offer from Reuben Hills and Seven Seeds. There's the option of filter coffee or espresso based drinks, but for today we stick with our stock-standard lattes.

Coca Cola ox cheek waffle - $19
Luckily the quality of the food made up for it, and this ox cheek waffle was no exception. The pulled ox cheek meat was so tender and had caramelly notes from the Coca Cola treatment. The ox cheek was served with a tumble of corn nubbins and tomato salsa and a slightly spicy horseradish mayo. The waffle was more a vehicle for the toppings rather than having much flavour in itself but it was substantial without being too heavy or doughy.

Crab po boy - $19

I'd been wanting to try the crab po boy for ages and it was delicious! There was a whole crab sandwiched between two toasted milk buns with a tangy house slaw and ranch dressing. The crab retained a nice crunch and I loved the creaminess from the sauce and slaw as well.

As we visited on a public holiday, the food and drinks incurred a 15% surcharge (prices shown here are excluding surcharge), which made for quite the expensive lunch! But I think the food was pretty damn good and would definitely return to try some other menu items like the Sticky Chicken and the sweet waffle with peanut butter, dulce de leche and caramel popcorn!

  3. Expensive but creative on the facade. And I will take your word that it is lovely on the inside. I love the way you captured that first photo with a crab-looking bun or a bun-looking crab LOL! Thanks for sharing!
