Ms G's, Potts Point

If you happen to see the numbers 621 on your ingredients list, you know your food is gonna taste good because it has MSG! Ms G's name is a play on the notorious flavour enhancer used in many Asian restaurants, reflecting its modern take on Asian food and presumably how delicious the food tastes as well.

Mini bánh mì - crispy pork belly or chicken katsu - $6.50

The restaurant decor is quirky, with jars hanging from the ceiling and mismatched cutlery and plates on each table. The menu is designed to share with snacks, smaller share plates and larger, more substantial dishes. We start with some mini bánh mì with crispy pork belly and chicken katsu, both with pickled vegetables and sandwiched between soft buns. Both of these were delicious, with the chicken katsu having more of a crunch and the pork belly being soft and tender.

Ocean trout tostada, green papaya, guacamole, red nahm jim - $19

The ocean trout tostada combines raw ocean trout, a Thai-style green papaya salad with red nahm jim and creamy avocado. The nahm jim gives it a real tangy and spicy kick and it's all piled on top of crunchy tostadas.

Vietnamese steak tartare, prawn crackers - $18

I've talked about my love of steak tartare before, and this Vietnamese twist on the classic French dish ticks all the boxes. Hidden under the crispy shallots is raw beef mixed with vietnamese herbs and dressing, adding a freshness to a dish that can sometimes be quite rich. Instead of toasted bread, the steak tartare is served with prawn crackers which suits me just fine!

Nasi goreng hitam - Squid ink fried rice, chorizo, sunny side egg - $19

Nasi goreng hitam a jet black fried rice, coloured black with squid ink. In amongst the spicy fried rice is the occasional surprise salty hit of chorizo, with a sunny side up fried egg on top to finish it off.

Jow's sweet and sour lamb ribs

I love lamb ribs and Jowett Wu's lamb ribs at Ms G's are a flavour bomb. The meat fell off the bone easily and was so tasty, I would definitely order this again.

Egg noodles, snow crab, yellow curry and garlic breadcrumbs - $29

They're not lying when they say this dish is fragrant - I reckon we could smell it before it hit the table. The yellow curry is delicious and coats each noodle strand with a fragrant, spicy sauce. The chilli levels of this dish were pushing my limits but it was one of those dishes that was so tasty that you can't stop eating it. There's a generous amount of snow crab on top as well, but the star for me was really the flavour of that yellow curry.

Stoner's Delight part 3: Doughnut ice cream, peanut dulce de leche, peanut and pretzel brittle, crispy bacon, mars bar brownie, passionfruit curd, potato chips and deep fried Nutella - $14

One of the things I was most excited about eating at Ms G's were the desserts. I had my eye on the Stoner's Delight dessert from the start, and it was packed full of crazy deliciousness like doughnut ice cream, brownies, peanut brittle, bacon, chips and deep fried nutella!! There was so much going on but each component was delicious on its own, with the deep fried nutella being a standout for me. I was glad for the passionfruit curd to add a bit of sourness to an otherwise very sweet dessert.

"The BOSS" Buttered popcorn ice cream, salted caramel, honeycomb, popcorn brittle, kaya French toast, blueberry jam - $14

We also decided to order 'The BOSS' which was amazing, and I actually ended up enjoying this more than Stoner's Delight. There was a nice combination of textures with the ice cream, popcorn brittle, French toast and honeycomb. I would never have thought that popcorn, honeycomb and blueberry jam would go together, but the flavours work really well and the kaya French toast provides a nice base for all the other components to stand on.

They may not add any "621" to the food, but the chefs at Ms G's don't need flavour enhancers when the food is already this delicious. The Asian influences in each dish not only make it take on a fun twist, but also make the most of the bold and sometimes pungent flavours of Asian cuisine. There's definitely no blandness on the menu, and it's also relatively easy on the wallet as well which is a bonus!

  1. The Stoner's Delight could so easily be sickly sweet but there's such a good balance of different components and textures. Loved Namira's Dream on our last visit too.
